ENGINEERING MASTERS IN MATERIALS SCIENCE
Full Time Engineering Master's Student Curriculum
Field Code:430105 School ID No.:Q20801
Field Name:Materials Engineering school or Department:Materials School
1.Program Introduction
Tianjin University's Materials Science and Engineering is considered a national first level key discipline and also contains materials science and materials processing engineering which are two second level disciplines.
2.Educational Objectives
1).Fully grasp all of the fundamental theories of Materials Science, advanced techniques and methods for practicing Materials Science, and possess the ability to independently take on engineering design, implementation, research and development, and engineering management projects.
2).Grasp a Foreign Language.
3).Support and uphold the Party line and its policies and guidelines, have a deep love for China, obey all the laws, possess excellent professionalism and ethics, and a rigorous scientific drive for the truth and a pragmatic learning style and work ethic.
4).Abide by academic regulations, uphold academic ethics and be of sound body and mind.
3.Educational Methods and Duration
The full time engineering masters program combines a course of study with professional practice, with the course of study in principle lasting at least one year. The professional practice may occur at the same time as the education or may be broken into smaller durations of time, with study in the School of Materials Science and Engineering limited to 2.5 years.
Full time engineering masters students typically have two advisors. One advisor is from SMSE (typically the primary advisor) and the other advisor is a senior expert in the field from industry or may be any technical expert who possesses an abundant amount of engineering experience and a strong sense of personal responsibility.
4.Scope of the Program
Polymeric Engineering Materials, Structural Metals, Functional Materials, Materials Corrosion and Surface Engineering, Ceramic Materials Process Engineering.
5.Program Credit Requirements
In order to complete a fulltime engineering masters degree, a student must earn at least 32 credits, 16 of which are from core courses, eight from technical elective courses and eight from required courses. This includes six credits of engineering practices and two credits of academic reports and exchanges. According to every major’s special characteristics, students will be required to take some laboratory courses, internships, engineering training and cutting edge lecture courses.
6. Master's Thesis
1).Selection of a Thesis Topic
Thesis topics must come from real world tasks or problems, and must have a clear technical background and real world value. Thesis topics are typically determined in the second to third semester of a student's course of study. The thesis may be geared either to academia or industry. Supervision of the thesis is carried out by both advisors and the students thesis research may also be guided by this group.
2).Thesis Content
The student's master's thesis must be completed independently with the guidance of the student's advisors, and must be of an appropriate length and level of technical depth such that it can reflect the student’s ability to comprehensively apply scientific theory, the scientific method and modern technology to solve real world problems. The thesis much have a theoretical basis, represent new thoughts and conclusions, and have practical applicability. Acceptable topics for thesis content include: engineering design and research, new technological research or technological upgrades, engineering software or applied software research and engineering management.
3).Thesis Proposal and Defense
Before an engineering master's student may apply for a thesis defense, all parts of their coursework must be completed with acceptable grades. The thesis must first be vetted by the student’s thesis advisors, who must be experts in the field in which the thesis was written or experts in a very similar field. After the thesis advisors approve of the master’s thesis, the thesis defense occurs in front of a committee. Upon satisfactory examination and review of the thesis by the thesis committee and the degree evaluation committee, the student will be awarded an engineering master’s degree and a master’s diploma.
