Discipline Code : 080503               Number: S20803

First Grade Discipline:Material Science and Engineering

Faculty: School of Material Science and Engineering

1.Program Introduction and Research Areas

Tianjin University's Materials Processing Engineering Master's progam is a part the First Grade Discipline of Materials Science and Engineering. In addition to TJU's First Grade Key discipline, SMSE also contains materials process engineering, materials physics and materials chemistry which are considered second grade disciplines.

Main Research Areas:

1).        Joining and Processing Technology for Advanced Materials

2).        Welding Mechanics and Evaluation of Structural Integrity

3).        Welding Metallurgy and Welding Materials

4).        Welding Process Control and Intelligent Automation

5).        Material Surface Strengthening and Functionalization

2. Objectives

In order to meet our nation’s economic and societal needs for harmonious development, to realize development through science and education and to successfully cultivate future talent, an education must “be geared towards modernization, the world as a whole and the future”. Graduates of TJU’s SMSE Master’s program must be able to meet the following requirements upon completion of the program:

1).        Have a professional knowledge of the subject while at the same time understanding the fundamentals of important theories in various subjects and have a width span of knowledge.

2).        Possess professional expertise and ability from scientific research, education, management and independent responsibility acquired over the course of the program to apply to the needs of the socio-economic development of China in combination with an advanced specialization in Materials.

3).        Have a skilled grasp of a foreign language.

4).        Feel a deep love for China, grasp the basic theories of Marxism, obey the laws and discipline, possess personal and professional ethics and develop as a well rounded individual.

5).        Comply with academic standards and ethics and be of sound body and mind

3.Duration

The Master's Program is typically 2.5 years. Classes are typically finished during the first year of study.

4.Courses and Credit

Student must complete a total of at least 27 credits, in which at least 13 credits are core courses, at least 6 credits are required courses, and at least 8 credits are technical elective courses.

5.Qualifying Examination

The qualifying examination is to determine how well the student has grasped all of the concepts taught in each of the classes as well as to determine the progress of the student's ongoing research from every aspect. The master's student qualifying examination is typically completed by three weeks before the end of the second semester and based on the results of the qualifying examination, the student may begin writing his or her thesis. Students must follow the requirements put forth by Tianjin University’s Master’s Thesis Educational Rules.

6.Thesis Proposal

Master's students thesis proposal should be completed three weeks before the end of the second semester of study and must be at least 50 pages in length.

7. Master's Thesis Requirements

In addition to following the university requirements for a master’s thesis, the student's advisor may specify requirements for the quality of the thesis (e.g. the nature of the academic research, completeness, originality, applicability to engineering, compositional style), and may make new assessments and requirements based on the student’s rate of progress on the thesis. The thesis must be carefully prepared, and must follow all of the relevant requirements and rules of SMSE for the purposes of a thesis defense.

8.Thesis Presentation and Publishing

Master's students must follow all of the pertinent regulations and guidelines in writing their theses during their study at TJU's SMSE.
